‘Makin’ Moves Sampler Vol 1′ features 2 wonderful soulful outings, the first is fantastic new song plucked from rhythmic shores of South Africa. ‘Don’t Go’ is a beautiful and deep afrocentric song from Jo-burg star DJ Qness featuring the soothing tones of Xoli M. Two class mixes come from NYC’s Quentin Harris who delivers his signature soulful heat, pinned together by a massively infectious synth bass hook; and a menacing dub, toying with the vocal to a haunting soundtrack of punchy synth stabs and tech-beats. Next up is a gorgeous song from young North London producer SMI, featuring the unmistakable voice of Croydon’s Shea Soul, titled ‘Just Fine’. Mixes come from New Jersey‘s Jihad Muhammad, adding in some fancy key work and lush sweeping strings; and San Fran‘s David Harness works up a hypnotic groove for the floor.
Summer 2012 saw the birth of a brand new events promotion company in London, ‘Makin’ Moves’. With already a host of successful parties under their belt, head honcho Matt Langrish-Smith and wing-man Jamesey make the next move and launch their exciting new record label.
Matt Langrish-Smith, London’s boy-about-town whose quick bio includes 3 years in Advertising at DMC and 5 years as Head of Events at Papa Records, taking their monthly party ‘Messages’ to the next level. In 2009 he collaborated with Dean Zepherin to set up the internationally acclaim Tribe Records UK (label and events company) with club residencies in Paris, Miami and London. Fast Forward to 2012 and Matt decided to spread his wings and launched a new events company ‘Makin’ Moves’ and joined forces with local London DJ talent, Jamesey. Along with hosting his own radio show on Housefm.net <http://Housefm.net/> since 2004, Jamesey has been an essential cog in the wheel of London’s soulful & deep house scene, performing at parties including BBE, Soulogic, to name a few. He has also played gigs around the world in Dubai, Russia, Sardinia, Barcelona, and NYC, among others. Jamesey first met Matt whilst at one of his residency parties at Offthemeters.com <http://Offthemeters.com/>. This chance meeting of minds marked the beginning of a flourishing new collaboration. In early 2009 they put on their first joint party, ‘Messages’ in London, which was a roaring success. After some years working on other projects the pair have come together once again. Matt & Jamesey both felt there was a gap in the London soulful/deep house scene for some good New York style underground house and also in response to the advent of Tracktor and laptop dj’s, a much needed sacred space to encourage and showcase creative DJ mixing once more. The first event was held at Brixton Clubhouse in July 2012, with DJ’s N’Dinga Gaba (Baltimore) and At One (Atjazz Record Co.) amongst others and was an instant success! Makin’ Moves launched their new residency at Bedroom Bar (upstairs in the Loft), London, this October. They will be using their events ongoing to showcase all their fantastic artists, including Shea Soul who will be performing a live PA on Friday 9th November.
“Makin’ Moves isn’t just any old record label and events company. We’re looking to do a lot of unique events this year including all day terrace parties, a monthly club residency party and exciting co-promoted events, both here and abroad. We’re looking to use our events to build and expose a fantastic repertoire of new artists on the label.” – Matt L-S
